The deadline has now passed for entries into three categories of the annual Funny Women Awards: The Stage Award, The Comedy Writing Award and The Comedy Shorts Award. This year the awards are sponsored by BBC Studios’ digital comedy channel, Funny Parts.

It’s onwards now to judge the entries. First up, The Stage Award. The funniest entries from Round 1 will progress to the heats. Twelve heats will take place from Edinburgh to London and from Dublin to Amsterdam. It’s basically like the Eurovision of comedy (but without the controversy.)

The Dublin heat, the first to take place here since Covid, will happen in Little Whelans, Wexford St, Dublin on Tuesday 24th June.

I will be on hosting duty, and I’m really looking forward to it. This is my first year getting involved with organising the awards, and it has been a fantastic experience so far. I’ve had the best craic in recent weeks, increasing awareness about the awards and encouraging Ireland’s funny women to enter. I can confirm that these ladies are as funny off stage as they are onstage.

Entrants will perform a tight five minutes each in the heat, slogging it out for a place in the semi-finals in August. Fingers crossed, several of the Irish entrants will make it through to the semis and onwards to the finals.

It’s guaranteed to be a quick-fire night of top talent from new and emerging Irish comedy voices. Come along to see for yourself, tickets are now available here.

On top of that, judges will busy themselves reviewing the Comedy Shorts and reading through scripts and treatments for The Comedy Writing Award to see who will progress through those categories.

Nominations are still open for the Content Creator Award. Nominate new talent that has caught your eye of late. Twenty acts with the most nominations go through to a public vote. This is the only category that’s voted for by the public, so give a shout out to your favourites and let’s see who will dethrone the current champion, Serena Terry, aka Mammy Banter. Nominate your favourite content creator here.

I hope to see you all in Little Whelans, on Tuesday 24th June.
