‘Oldies Unleashed’ is a new radio show on Near FM that airs for an hour every Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. The show is hosted by my pal and collaborator, Orla Diamantino. One of the things that I love about the show is that it gives a voice to older people. If you’re over fifty, you’re in. I’m 51 (and a half), so I just about qualified for a live chat with Orla on Tuesday, 22nd April.

Essentially, the show is about having conversations with and putting a spotlight on older, and dare I say wiser (yes, I dared) people. Everyone over fifty has already banked five decades of life experience, so, of course, we have stories to tell.

Orla starts by exploring her guests’ younger lives and how those experiences underpin who they are today. This makes sense because our origin stories are the foundations of our character. I started by talking about my days in convent school, a topic regularly featured in my standup comedy. From there, we drifted into chats about comedy writing.

I went on to explain why I don’t believe in Imposter Syndrome or ‘Women’s Doubting Disease’ as it’s known. We women give Imposter Syndrome too much air. Let’s not.

We chatted about my menopausal rage. (Or is it just rage? Who knows?) I gave insight into what would happen if you called me “Karen.” And I also explained what advice I’d give to my younger self.

I adore music—I always have—so I deliberated a lot about what tracks to choose. Ultimately, I opted for U2, The Coronas, Thin Lizzy, and Coldplay bangers.

Orla has some incredible guests on her show, which you can listen to on Near FM Mixcloud. You can also listen to my episode here.
